Fall Curriculum for Infants

Each week has a different theme. This is curriculum for the next 2 weeks.

Week1/Theme 1: Balls

Language Development

Song: “Roll This Way” (rolling ball on floor to child as we sing this song)

(younger: offer the ball as you sing. Older children: take turns rolling ball, invite to sing).

Vocabulary: “Grandparent” Pictures of child’s grandparents. We ask child, “Who is this?” “Is this _____ (using the families words for Grandma or Grandpa).

(Younger children: Direct attention to the picture and wait for reaction, saying the name of the person. Older children: Show the cards one at a time and ask who the person is, encourage child to say names).

Physical Development

Large Motor: “Having a Ball.” Two balls one for the child, one for the teacher. Teacher demonstrates holding ball above head and touching toes as well as side to side. (younger: roll ball across tummy while they are lying on back, repeating with different kinds of balls. Older children: Demonstrate actions, child leads while teacher follows).

Fine Motor: “Playdough balls.” Teacher demonstrates how to roll play dough into a ball between palms. Continue as long as there is interest.

(Younger children: Teacher makes the play dough balls, offering to child to grasp, hold and squeeze. Older children: Teacher challenges child to make “small” and “big” balls of dough and names a color dough to make a ball out of).

Art

Grandparent’s Day Gift (Sept. 7th)Make a picture gift (paint, picture, marker, glue, tape)

Child will take home a gift for both sets of Grandparents.

Sensory

Ball Sounds Teacher places ball on ground/floor slaps the ball. This is repeated on carpet, outside on grass and bark.

(Younger children: Teacher holds both child and ball on lap, guiding child to imitate the slapping sounds. Older child: Child may want to explore the sound of the ball on other objects).

Cognitive Development

Shapes: Circles. Teacher draws child’s attention to circular objects and traces her finger around them, encouraging child to do the same.

(Younger child: Child can hold circular object. Older child: child is invited to draw freely, teacher brings any circles to child’s attention).

Week2/Theme 1: Balls

Language Development

Song: “I See Something.” Teacher sings the song as child chases a ball (provided). (Younger children: Teacher sings the song offering ball to child to grasp. Older children: After singing the song a few times, teacher invites the child to sing it).

Vocabulary: “Ball” vocabulary card. Teacher introduces the object on the card as a ball and invites the child to search for balls hidden in the room.

(Younger children: Teacher shows child the ball card and plays peek-a-boo with ball or rolls ball off of child’s tummy. Older child: Ask child to name the color of ball after finding hidden balls).

Physical Development

In and Out: Child is invited to toss assorted balls into a box. (Younger children: Teacher holds the ball near the box for child to “drop” in box instead of throwing. Older children: Teacher can increase the distance between the ball and the box according to ability).

Ball and Tube: Child is offered balls of different sizes to roll down tubes.

(Younger children: Teacher offers child paper towel tubes, set upright, for child to knock over. Older children: Child can explore dropping balls through tubes on different objects. Teacher comments on how far they role).

(Younger children: Secure an apple pattern to a high chair tray, offering a jumbo crayon to decorate pattern. Older child: offer 2 different colors of paint and encourage child to attach photo and stem).

Cognitive Development

Counting: Cotton ball count: Teacher places 5 cotton balls in a container depending upon child’s ability to count. Children are invited to remove cotton balls one at a time as teacher counts. Teacher counts as they are replaced. Child is encouraged to count along. (Younger children: Container of cotton balls is offered for child to manipulate. Teacher rubs a cotton ball on arm and face and also counts to 3, dumping cotton balls on head. Older Child: Teacher offers 5-10 cotton balls).

Colors: Child is invited to listen to teacher read “Baby’s Colors.” Teacher points to each color and asks children to point to them also.
